THE MOTORCYCLES
A great deal of thought went into the suitability of the motorcycles. Several conditions had to be taken into account, such as riding on good and bad tarmac roads, rough dirt tracks, and the punishing conditions that the desert has to offer. First thoughts pointed towards a trail type of motorcycle, powered by a single cylinder air cooled engine. However, during road tests the engine proved to be very lumpy; the motorcycle was also tiring to ride, and uncomfortable. Taking everything in consideration, the final decision was based on the following main requirements:-
Following several test rides on various makes and models of motorcycle, the Honda Transalp, whilst not ideal in every area, was a good compromise, so the decision was made to purchase two new ones.
MOTORCYCLE MODIFICATIONS
The following are some of the modifications that will be carried out by ourselves:- Electrical System: It will be necessary to fit a 12- volt socket outlet for charging the G.P.S. Navigation System, and to provide power for a map light, and ancillary equipment. Side Racks: Side racks will be essential, and must be designed and fabricated to secure 20 litre jerry cans each side of the motorcycles for extra fuel and water. The side racks must be mounted as low as possible to achieve a low centre of gravity, thus ensuring the stability of the motorcycles and preventing weaving at relatively high speeds across the desert. Fuel System: To prevent dust and sand entering the fuel system, and causing carburettor blockages, an extra paper type in- line fuel filter will be fitted. This type of filter is easily cleaned with fuel from the petrol tank. Air System: To prevent dust and sand entering the air box, and causing carburettor blockages, the existing dry paper air filter will be replaced by a re-usable foam type filter, which can be cleaned with petrol, and then oiled. A primary filter skin will also be fitted to keep the main filter as clean as possible. Tyres: As a compromise, dual- purpose trail type tyres will be fitted. However we do realise that these may not be totally adequate across the Sahara, and we may have to review this decision at a later date. Rear Rack: The rear rack of the motorcycle will be modified so that soft canvas luggage can be attached. In addition, a tank bag will be fitted to the fuel tank which should give us enough space for the most essential items of clothing, spare parts and emergency medical equipment, etc. Tools: Accessory racks will be made to accommodate tyre levers and tools that will be secured using elasticised hooks and adjustable straps.
